The Doctor had often wondered why he'd never heard what had befallen Leela. He'd gotten updates on Sarah Jane, Martha, even the Brig.
But never Leela.
The Sontarans had tried converting the Earth's air, and no word of Leela. The Toclafane ran rampant over the globe, fetching former Companions for the Master their Master their friend the Master, and no sight or sign of Leela.
When he finally found her, it was because he wasn't looking (and there was a scientific term for that, no doubt); though in hindsight, perhaps, it should have been obvious. His favorite barbarian was living among barbarians - only now she had a PhD and other degrees under her belt, which still had a dagger, he saw when he came upon her and the tribe she was studying.
"Leela of Sevateem!" the Doctor pronounced, delighted to see her once more.

"Doctor!" she shouted back, her face lighting up.
