She's is his old faithful, really. Miss Grant had Mr Jones, Miss Smith has that blasted metal dog of hers and the Doctor - wherever the fellow happens to be running off to now in that blue box - has the TARDIS. He has Doris.

She's a good girl, putting up with his military manner and the inevitiable calls from UNIT and requests for just one more adventure to save the world. And like any good English woman, she frowns a little before smiling and giving him a gentle kiss on the lips.

"I suppose dinner will have to wait, then?"

"You know how it is, Doris. Giant Squid on the Thames, duty calls."

"Retirement used to mean something you know..."

"I'll be back by tomorrow hopefully. If London explodes of course I might be a little longer."

She gives him that enchanting smirk. "Oh go on then, Lethbridge Stewart. I'll be here as always, the dutiful wife."

"But you do it so well, darling." They permit themselves another long kiss, he sticks on that blasted hat again and with a final wave he gotten into another helicopter into the night.

And she waves back at him. His old faithful Doris.
